Waves U12 White - Waterville Valley Tourney
The Cape Cod Waves U12 White team participated in the annual Invitational Tournament held in Waterville Valley, NH. Playing in the ‘A’ Division, they started off against the Lady Rebels of Walpole. It was a 7:00 a.m. game and the girls were exhausted, but they managed to take a one goal lead and hang on through the first period. The Rebels came back to take the lead, 2-1, until the Waves tied it up in the third. “The girls never seem to play well early in the morning,” agreed the coaches, “and today is no exception.” The game ended in a tie in a disappointing effort against a weaker team. Later that afternoon would be a different story, playing against a scrappy North Shore Vipers team. Cape Cod came out playing better, but the game remained scoreless until more than two minutes into the third period when the Vipers scored on a flukey goal from half-ice. The Waves then turned up the heat, but couldn’t seem to put the puck in the net and a couple of defensive mistakes in the final minute and a half led to a 3-0 Vipers win. “Three goals isn’t too bad, but you can’t win if you don’t score,” said one coach. Sunday morning was the marquis match-up of the division, but it was another early morning game and against Assabet, who had not given up a goal yet on their way to back-to-back 6-0 wins over Walpole and the Vipers. The Waves may have been disappointed thus far, but they certainly didn’t show it, coming out with guns blazing early. Ariana Bourque, fighting against three Assabet players, walked out of the corner with the puck and beat the goalie top corner. That goal gave the Waves a first period lead and was the first goal scored against that team. Holding on to a slim 1-0 lead, the Waves frustrated the Assabet team and kept them on their heels. It was late in the third period when Assabet managed to tie the game, and that is how it would end: 1-1 against the eventual Champions. Coach Skelly said, “They played great. Hard work, good passing, it all came together.” Sunday afternoon was the finale and it was a rematch against Walpole. The Waves had something to prove, but Walpole wasn’t about to give up either. Giving up two quick goals, the girls from the Cape pulled it together. “You could see the anger in their faces; they knew they shouldn’t be losing to this team.” Going back out in the second period, they reeled off the next 3 goals and took back the game. “They controlled every aspect of that game, they deserved to win.” And win they did, Sarah White would ice the game with two goals in the final minute and a half, and the Waves finished in 3rd Place!
