Waves U14/16 Casco Bay Tourney Champs
Saturday and Sunday, Jan 13th & 14th, the Cape Cod Waves combined 14/16 Team went undefeated in the travel division of the Casco Bay (Portland Maine) Girls Hockey Tournament to take home the Championship trophy. Teams were represented from Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire and Massachusetts. Disciplined positional play, solid passing and team work were demonstrated in all 5 games showing the benefits of this years positive coaching from Jackie McDonnell, TC Cleary, Joni Kosmach and Tom Birch. The team had racked up 20 goals in five games with goalie Kelly Johnson holding the opposing five teams to only two goals against for the weekend. The entire team played first rate with notable performances by goalie Kelly Johnson, key point leaders Aubrey Bachand, Torri Snow and Courtney Birch. The 12 year old recruits Courtney Alexander, Sara White and Abby Woods were brought up to supplement the numbers for Saturday’s play. A key game clinching goal in the semi final came from Aubrey Bachand with less than 2 minutes left to give them a 1-0 win and move them to the championship round. Loyal role players Timarie Villa and Harleigh Jenkins were solid in their hustle and performance on offense. While offense wins games the defense wins championships without a lot of glory as was the case with Shannon Cleary, Mikaela Stoltz, Kaly Spilhaus, Courtney Sollows, Courtney Alexander and Abby VanWormer. Forward Chelsea Perry put home a beautiful top shelf “one timer” goal positioned at the post after it had passed through all 5 wave players perfect passes starting with Abby’s breakout pass received off the stick of her goalie. This opened up a flood gate of goals, including Courtney Birch’s “hat trick” in that final game where they drove home the 6 – 1 win and brought the championship trophy back to the Cape.
